Getting started with DocsInOrder
Install the plugin, send your first request and learn the everyday tasks. Most firms are set up in about ten minutes.
Install
- In WordPress, go to Plugins → Add New and search for DocsInOrder.
- Click Install Now, then Activate.
- You'll land on the Setup screen.
Requirements: WordPress 6.5 or newer, PHP 7.4 or newer, HTTPS, and a site that can send email.
Setup
The Setup screen checks everything DocsInOrder needs and shows the next step:
- Your firm name and logo, shown on the client page and in emails.
- Private storage: the folder is writable and blocked from direct web access.
- Test email: send one to yourself and confirm it arrived. If it doesn't, install an SMTP plugin.
- HTTPS and pretty permalinks (Settings → Permalinks, any option except Plain).
- Upload size limit, PHP features and scheduled tasks.
The same checks appear under Tools → Site Health.
Your first request
- Go to DocsInOrder → Requests and click New request.
- Choose a template or a blank checklist. Add, remove or reorder items and set which are required.
- Enter the client's name and email, an optional due date and a personal message.
- Click Create request. With Email the link to the client now ticked, the client gets an email with their private link. Untick it to copy the link and send it yourself.
Reviewing uploads
- Requests with new uploads show Ready to review on the dashboard.
- Open a request, view each file, then Approve it or Request changes with a note.
- After requesting changes, use Let your client know now? to email them straight away (Pro does this automatically).
- Send reminder emails the client a list of what's still missing.
- Download all (ZIP) saves the whole request. Mark complete when you're done.
- Under Client link you can change the expiry date, issue a new link or revoke it.
Templates
DocsInOrder includes a Personal Tax Intake and a Mortgage Application template. Built-in templates can't be edited, but you can duplicate them. Save any request's checklist as a new template from the request screen.
Staff access
- Administrators always have access.
- Give a staff member the DocsInOrder Staff role, or set Access: Yes on their user profile to add access to their existing role.
- Customer and subscriber accounts, including WooCommerce customers, can never be given access.
- Staff with only DocsInOrder access go straight to DocsInOrder when they log in, and WooCommerce won't send them to My Account.
Pro and your licence
- Start the free trial or buy Pro from Pricing. Freemius emails your licence key and download link (check Promotions or Spam).
- Download the Pro zip and upload it under Plugins → Add New → Upload Plugin. The free plugin must stay installed.
- Activate Pro and paste your licence key. You'll land on the Pro tab with your licence shown.
Pro updates arrive through the normal WordPress updates screen while your licence is active. To move Pro to another site, deactivate the licence on the old site from Pro → Account first. Lost your key? Find it at users.freemius.com.
Troubleshooting
Clients don't receive emails
Send a test from Setup. If it doesn't arrive, your host probably isn't sending mail reliably: install an SMTP plugin and connect it to your email provider. Ask clients to check spam.
The client link shows "page not found"
Go to Settings → Permalinks and click Save Changes once, then try the link again.
Uploads fail for large files
Your server's upload limit is shown on the Setup screen. Ask your host to raise upload_max_filesize and post_max_size.
